I wrote Hiccup mostly by accident. I had an idea for a sketch about a couple who wants to have sex, but can't because one of them has the hiccups. They then try as many different methods as they can think of to get ride of them. I wrote this scene, and sort of fell in love with the characters in it. I wondered what else they might get up to.

I think as a writer, it's my job to create the sort of work I wish the world had more of. I want to create opportunities for myself and other women and minorities. I'm so glad we're seeing more women on stage and TV, and that there are so many strong, powerful, badass female characters being written. But I've never really felt that those women were representative of me. I want people to like me. I'm accommodating, and friendly, and overly apologetic. I will do anything to avoid a conflict. And that might not be what society defines as a 'strong woman', but I think I'm strong. Ruby is like that. She is gentle, feminine, and bumbling, and what I endeavour to do, in my writing, is demonstrate the strength in that.

Hiccup takes the traditional structure of a Rom-Com, and use it to discuss issues like vaginal health, feminism, sex, sisterhood, toxic relationships, and what it means to be a strong woman.

Hiccup was produced by Out The Attic Productions in March of 2020.
